Maintenance

Commercial Umbrellas are an investment and so it is important to look after them after the initial installation.  Please follow these steps to maintain the quality and integrity of your shade structures:

  1. Carry out regular checks on the structure- PVC umbrellas in particular can take a lot of pressure from wind loading. Please ensure you visually inspect your umbrellas routinely for any visible issues.
  2. Check your shade structure after a major wind or weather event- It is particularly important to check your umbrella and the surrounding fixtures after any major wind event including storms. Remove any debris and if necessary, isolate the area and organise to have the sail repaired in a timely manner.
  3. Cutback overhanging trees and branches- tree debris can cause damage to your sails and should be trimmed back.
  4. Clean your Umbrella Canopies 1-2 times a year- after brushing off any dust or debris with a soft-bristled brush, use a mild detergent (appropriate for the fabric) to wash the sail and spray with a hose at a gentle pressure. Treat your umbrella canopy delicately using low-pressure and soft cleaning tools. It is best to conduct cleaning on a hot day so the sails can dry naturally. If the height of your shade sails makes it too difficult to clean, you may need to consult a professional to remove and re-install the sails. This would usually come at a small cost.

*Failure to maintain your shade sails appropriately may result in warranty becoming void.

Structural Steel work will all be as per Aus Standards with Hot Dip Galvanised steel the norm. We can also 2-pack paint structural steel with a heavy-duty polyurethane paint for the longest lasting paint finish. We tend to steer away from powdercoating structural steel but will always opt with powdercoating for all aluminium products.

There are a range of other providers and specifications so for anything further please contact our office.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the timeframe for the installation of my Commercial Umbrella?

The installation time can vary from job to job and is dependent on factors such as permit requirements, work conditions and project size.

As a rough guide for a small project with permit requirements, the design, engineering and permit application can take around 4-6 weeks. From there, the manufacturing, supply and installation takes around 2-3 months.

Time frames are completely job dependent. The team will be able to give you a rough estimate of lead times after quoting. Looking at our recent projects may also give you an indication of timings.

What is the cost for the design, supply and installation of a Commercial Umbrella?

The cost of a Commercial Umbrella is dependent on a range of job- and industry-specific factors. Location, site surfaces, design and engineering are just some factors that may impact the price of a shade structure. In addition to this, external factors such as labour costs and steel prices also play a part in determining the overall cost of a project.

Commercial umbrellas will start at a price of around $5000 dependent on sizing and a range of other factors.

Looking at our recent projects may give some indication of pricing. For a more accurate estimate, we recommend contacting us for a quote using the details on our contact page.

Do I need a permit for my Commercial Umbrella?

The need for permits and council approval depends on a range of factors such as the size of the Umbrella, the location of install and the building type. You may be exempt from council approval if:

-Your umbrella is less than 3.6m high from the ground.
-Your umbrella covers an area of less than 20m2 (shadecloth), 10m2 for PVC waterproof.

It is a good idea to contact your local council department for clarification. The team at SBD Shades are happy to offer our advice and assistance.

Are Umbrellas waterproof?

It depends on the material. Whilst all umbrellas will provide protection from the sun and UV rays, not all are entirely waterproof. Shade cloth is more affordable and showerproof option but does not offer protection from heavy rainfall due to its woven mesh construction. Total waterproofing can be achieved with PVC material. This comes at a slightly higher price point due to the heavier weight of the material and the additional steelworks required to hold it in place. Acrylic canopies are also a waterproof option.

Regardless of the material, all umbrellas are installed on a high-tensioned angle aimed to deflect rainfall and reduce movement in the wind. We are happy to work with you to choose the most suitable fabric for your project and price point.
