Swinburne University of Technology

In collaboration with Katz Architects and Builder Domain National, Swinburne University of Technology requested our services regarding a major shade issue they had on the rooftop/balcony of one of their student resident buildings. What existed was an exposed and open area which was subjected to strong weather all year round. The university had aims to transform this area into a functional and appealing space in which students could reside. Due to the lack of fixing points and the amount of posts required to cover the area, a shade sail was not conducive to a comfortable and practical living space. Instead, the team designed three Customised Hypar Cantilevered Shade Cloth Umbrellas spanning 4m x 4m with a clearance height of 2.4m. The benefit of cantilever umbrellas is that they provide shade without any central post impediment, maximising space and access.

Construction works began immediately after design approval to meet a quick turnaround time. Three hot dipped galvanized structural steel posts were anchored into place. The cantilever components were then attached as per design specs through a series of nuts and bolts. The final product had the appearance of a single object projecting outwards from the building and maximizing the space of the area by limiting the system to just three posts. All three umbrellas were fabricated with Commshade Extra Heavy Duty Shade Cloth to withstand any turbulent weather conditions.

Adorned with an aquamarine shade cloth, the hypar umbrellas transformed the roof top into a comfortable and visually appealing space. Staff and students of the university displayed positive feedback and we are extremely happy with the final outcome.
