Set within Melbourne’s historic Pentridge Prison precinct in Coburg, Structures by Design worked alongside Construction Engineering (CE) to deliver a custom operable roof solution for the Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge Melbourne, part of the precinct’s major $100 million redevelopment.
As specialists in retractable roofs and louvre roofs in Melbourne, Structures by Design supplied and installed six Suntech AXIS MAX bioclimatic louvre roof systems to transform the hotel’s outdoor restaurant and dining area into a functional, all-weather space.
The AXIS MAX system features rotating aluminium louvres, allowing the venue to control sunlight and ventilation or close the roof for protection from Melbourne’s changing weather.
Spanning approximately 22 metres, the project incorporates six interconnected systems measuring approximately 3.5m x 9m. The louvre roofs were installed onto a custom steel structure designed and constructed by CE, with integrated drainage and concealed plumbing connections providing a clean architectural finish.
A six-channel remote control and wired rain sensor provide simple operation and automatic weather protection, giving the restaurant greater flexibility to use its outdoor dining area throughout the year.
The completed project combines contemporary operable roof technology with the historic architecture of Pentridge Prison, creating a striking and highly functional outdoor dining environment.
