Good Nature is one of Australian Venue Co’s newest venues in Federation Square, a complete reimagining of the site previously home to Beer Deluxe and its distinctive marquee structure. With a full new venue design underway, Aus Venue Co wanted the outdoor area built to trade in any weather from day one, not retrofitted later.
They came to SBD Shades and LouvreLux for a retractable roof purpose-built into the new venue’s design: full weather control without losing the open-air feel that makes a Fed Square venue work.
The build
A custom aluminium frame, engineered to Good Nature’s exact footprint as part of the new venue design and built to handle Melbourne’s coastal-influenced climate without corrosion or fatigue over time. Local powdercoating gave a durable, on-brand finish with none of the lead times or colour-match issues of an imported structure.
Danpal multicell polycarbonate panelling was fixed across sections of the roof, letting natural light in while adding thermal and weather protection. Five retractable PVC roof bays running Suntech (Europe) systems give the venue on-demand control: fully open on a clear day, fully closed against wind, rain or cold.
The result
A retractable roof system built into Good Nature from the ground up, giving Aus Venue Co a genuinely all-weather outdoor space at one of their flagship venues: a bookable outdoor area year-round from opening day, no trade lost to a bad forecast, a premium finish matching the rest of the new venue, and less reliance on outdoor heaters and short-term fixes.
