Fixed louvres are designed for light control, ventilation, and privacy. Proper maintenance ensures they last longer and function well. Here’s a brief guide:
1. Clean Louvres every 3-6 months:
-Remove debris such as leaves, branches, or dirt using a soft broom or blower.
-Wash with mild soap and water:
-Use a sponge or soft cloth (no abrasive pads).
-Avoid high-pressure washers near joints or seals.
-Rinse thoroughly to prevent soap residue and streaks.
-Dry naturally or with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.
2. Check the structure annually or after severe weather conditions- look for cracks or chips, loose or broken slats, corrosion or rust and warping or bending. Minor damage such as small blemishes can be resolved at home using touch up paint. For more complex or structural damage, it is best to contact a professional for support.
3. Check for blockages after seasonal changes or heavy winds– fixed louvres are designed to allow airflow and any blockages can affect their efficiency. Visually inspect the gaps between the slats for debris, leaves or any foreign material. Ensure that there are no plants, vines or other obstructions growing around the louvres. Gently remove any debris by hand or using a soft brush.
If you notice significant damage, corrosion, or if the louvres are difficult to maintain yourself, it’s wise to consult a professional. They can assess the situation and recommend repairs or replacements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fixed louvre roof?
A fixed louvre roof is a non-movable shading system made up of angled slats (louvres) that allow natural light and airflow while offering protection from rain and direct sun. Unlike adjustable systems, the louvres remain in a fixed position.
Are fixed louvre roofs waterproof?
No, fixed louvre roofs are not completely waterproof. While they offer some rain protection depending on the louvre angle and design, water can still pass through during heavy rainfall.
How do fixed louvres compare to adjustable ones?
Fixed louvres are more cost-effective and low-maintenance, but they lack the flexibility of adjustable systems. Adjustable louvres can open and close to control light and airflow, while fixed louvres provide consistent shading.
Do I need a permit to install a fixed louvre roof?
The need for permits and council approval is dependent on a range of factors such as location, size and building type. Generally, a building permit is required unless the louvre pergola system is freestanding and under 10m2. Open air pergolas (non-closing systems) often do not require a building permit. Site with a heritage or other types of overlays may also require a Planning Permit.
It is a good idea to contact your local council department for clarification. The team at SBD Shades are happy to offer our advice and assistance.
